Frequently Asked Questions
I’m not facing any problems at work right now. Why should I join a union?
It’s great you’re not facing issues now, but union membership is like insurance — protecting you if challenges arise, such as disputes, redundancy, or safety concerns. Even when things are smooth, the CWU works behind the scenes to improve conditions and secure better terms for everyone.
Don’t unions lack the power they once had? What difference can they make today?
While the landscape has changed, unions like the CWU still protect workers’ rights and negotiate pay, conditions, and fair treatment. They remain crucial for ensuring workers’ voices are heard, especially in tough times.
Why should I join a union if I can handle issues with my employer myself?
You may resolve some issues alone, but unions provide collective strength for better pay, safety, and job security. The CWU offers expert representation that can make a big difference in serious disputes or legal matters.
What kinds of issues can the union help with? Do unions only help with pay disputes?
Unions assist with pay, health and safety, unfair treatment, discrimination, bullying, workloads, facilities, grievances, disciplinary issues, pensions, and more — protecting your rights in many workplace areas.
How can I become more active or involved in union activities?
Attend meetings, volunteer as a workplace rep, join committees (health and safety, equality), participate in campaigns, or take union training to develop negotiation and leadership skills.
Isn't union membership expensive? How can I afford the fees?
Membership fees are a small investment compared to the benefits — better pay, improved conditions, legal support, training, and services that can save you money long term.
Will joining a union harm my relationship with my employer?
No. The CWU fosters fair treatment and positive employer relationships, as a happy and safe workforce benefits everyone.
What support will I get in the event of a grievance or disciplinary issue?
You’ll get expert advice, representation at meetings, legal support if needed, and strong advocacy to ensure fair treatment and quick resolution.
How does collective bargaining work? Do we vote on big issues?
The union negotiates with employers on your behalf. Members share their views beforehand, and for major issues, a vote ensures decisions reflect the majority’s opinion.
I've received an invitation to a meeting with my employer. Do I need a Union Rep to attend?
It’s wise to have a Union Rep, especially for sensitive meetings. They support, advise, and represent you, ensuring fair treatment.

I've only just joined the CWU, will you help me?
